Governing

Topics:

This chapter describes how you can configure SmartMode to govern requests at your site. In addition, information on defining thresholds, creating custom rules, generating rule files, and setting governing criteria is provided.

For an overview of the governing process, see Introducing SmartMode.

Before governing can begin, you must activate usage monitoring and create data rules or create custom rules only. You then can build rule files with data rules, custom rules or both data and custom rules.

To create data rules, an administrator defines permissible site-specific thresholds designating the amount of resources that a request may use. Based on usage monitoring data and threshold information, SmartMode then builds data rules about how requests are to be governed against specific data objects. These rules are placed in rule files, which can be assigned to a database. The governing facility uses these rules when inspecting each request, stopping any request that exceeds the predetermined resource thresholds.
