When a user submits a request against any database monitored by SmartMode, the governing facility performs high-speed resource usage estimates at run time, using the rules that it previously determined. It uses the rules that are stored in the rule file associated with the database. SmartMode decides whether to run or cancel each request based on the rule file. Depending on the decision, one of the following actions occurs: |

In addition to the resources each request may use, SmartMode considers the time of day, the date, and detailed characteristics of the request and compares this to the information in the rule file.
The Governor can be turned on or off for any database at any time, but before you can turn Governing on you must assign a rule file to the database.
Before you can turn on governing for a database, you must associate a rule file with the database. You can associate a rule file that contains data rules for that database, or a rule file that contains only Custom rules, which is therefore database independent and can be assigned to any database.
All available Rule files for the selected database display. This includes any Rule files with data rules for the selected database and rule files that contain only Custom rules.
Once you have assigned a rule file to a database, you can begin to govern the requests submitted against it.
ADVISE is a feature that enables the system administrator to ease SmartMode into the production environment. When the governing mode is ADVISE, the Usage Monitor indicates which request would have been cancelled if governing had been set on. Before the report displays, a message is returned to the user indicating that the request would have been cancelled.
ADVISE gives you the ability to log data about a request that would normally have been cancelled by SmartMode. With this information, you can then decide if the threshold limits in effect are correct, and if governing should be turned on.
