How to Apply an Individual PTF

Maintenance (a service pack or PTF) changes the contents of one or more of the standard FOCUS modules. The correction may also affect the error message files.

Each maintenance item also shows a PUT (update) level number. If you have several items to apply, process each one individually, in ascending update level sequence, not in the PTF number sequence. The PTF number is merely a substitute name with no intrinsic significance. The application of maintenance will not be reflected in the FOCUS release signature, but can be confirmed by issuing the following command at the FOCUS prompt:

? PTF

The following procedure should be used to apply the PTFs to your systems:

  1. Mount the cartridge as 181 on the FOCUS maintenance ID.
  2. Access your FOCUS maintenance disk as A in READ/WRITE mode.
  3. Issue the following CMS command:
    VMFPLC2 LOAD * *

If there are special instructions accompanying the PTF cartridge, follow those steps. If no special instructions accompany the cartridge, continue with Step 4 below.

  4. Validate your maintenance and setup.

If the PTFVR EXEC file was unloaded from the PTF cartridge, execute this EXEC now. Issue the following command for each PTF number:

    EXEC PTFVR nnnnnn

    where:

    nnnnnn

    Is the PTF number.

This will invalidate your maintenance and setup. If any errors are generated, follow the instructions displayed, or contact your support representative for further assistance. After correcting the errors that were displayed, re-execute the PTFVR EXEC until no errors are generated. Error messages include the string '@@@' in the text of the message. The string '???' in the text of the message indicates a warning, which is only of concern if it is unexpected.

Warning: Do not continue with the maintenance process if errors display unless you have received specific instructions regarding those errors from your support representative. Error messages include the string '@@@' in the text of the message. The string '???' in the text of the message indicate a warning, which is only of concern if it is unexpected.

  5. If any files of the form GExxxxxx EXEC, where xxxxxx is the PTF number, were unloaded from the tape as part of this maintenance, execute those EXECs now. If more than one maintenance item is being installed, or more than one GExxxxxx EXEC was unloaded, run them in ascending Put Level sequence.
  6. Execute the GENFS EXEC to create FOCUS (only if it has been previously installed). Refer to Basic Installation, for further details if needed.
  7. After the FOCUS module has been generated and tested, move the new modules to the FOCUS production disk by executing the COPYFS EXEC.
