External Sort Considerations

In CMS, you can use one of the following external sort products with any TABLE, FML, MATCH, or GRAPH report request: DFSORT, Syncsort, and VMSORT. The sort must be 31-bit addressable. FOCUS always respects your sort product's installation parameters.

We recommend that you issue a GLOBAL TXTLIB command to identify the location of the sort software. If FOCUS cannot locate the sort, it issues a GLOBAL TXTLIB SORTLIB command. If FOCUS still cannot locate the sort software, it terminates with the following error message:

(FOC909) CRITICAL ERROR IN EXTERNAL SORT. RETURN CODE IS: 16

You also get a CMS error message if the system sort is DFSORT/CMS and your temporary disk is not large enough for your sort requirements. With DFSORT/CMS, the maximum temporary disk obtainable is 16 cylinders. If this is not large enough for your sort requests, you may need to modify the DUFMAC MACRO to add space for sort work files. Consult the IBM DFSORT/CMS manual for your release of DFSORT.
